Lawrence of Arabia film editor Anne V. Coates dies

Oscar-winning British film editor Anne V. Coates has died at the age of 92.
Anne, who worked on films including Lawrence of Arabia, Erin Brockovich, Out of Sight and The Elephant Man, passed away on Monday (08May18).
Bosses at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) confirmed the legendary editor’s death and paid tribute to her on Twitter.
Their post read, “We’re so sad to learn that British film editor Anne V. Coates has died. During her incredible career, Anne was BAFTA-nominated four times for work including The Elephant Man and Erin Brockovich, and received the BAFTA Fellowship in 2007. She will be greatly missed.”
Fellow British movie veteran, script supervisor Angela Allen, told The Hollywood Reporter that Anne died at the Motion Picture Country Home and Hospital in Los Angeles, while Elisabeth Sereda, a friend of Anne’s film editor daughter Emma Hickox, shared her pal’s private Instagram tribute to her mother in a post on Twitter.
Emma wrote that her mum was her inspiration and was “deeply loved”, before concluding her post, “Your choice to fade to black was the perfect end to a wonderful life!”
In addition to her four BAFTA nominations, Anne won an Oscar for her editing on David Lean’s iconic 1963 film Lawrence of Arabia, later gaining four more Academy Awards nods. She was also honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Oscar in 2016 – and collected her statuette at that year’s Governor’s Ball bash. At the ceremony Richard Gere paid tribute to her as “one of the great giants of our industry” and “the greatest of the great, great, great film editors”.
Over the course of her career Anne, who was also famed for her wit, worked as an editor on 55 films, with 2015’s 50 Shades of Grey her final movie. She was attached to another project, titled A Dolphin in Our Lake, at the time of her death.
