A writer of cheap detective novels is immobilized in a hospital bed due to a debilitating skin disorder. As he becomes delirious, he mentally rewrites one of his early novels, "The Singing Detective," with himself in the title role, and with memories bursting forth in the form of 1940s songs. stricken with a severe illness. The drama also focuses on his attempts to cope with his illness and features flashbacks to his own childhood.
