NBC Announces Three Hour Comedy Block on Thursdays

ALT TEXTHooray! Turns out, NBC is capable of actually making good decisions.

The Peacock just announced that, come January 20, they’re doing a massive schedule shake-up on Thursday nights by expanding their comedy night to three hours in length. Here’s how things will look (in EST):

8:00 p.m. Community

8:30 p.m. Perfect Couples

9:00 p.m. The Office

9:30 p.m. Parks and Recreation

10:00 p.m. 30 Rock

10:30 p.m. Outsourced

So, this mid-season adjustment is a pretty significant change. Supposedly, the network toyed with this idea back in the springtime, but the risk seemed too high. Now, it seems that — since they’re getting destroyed in the rating on a weekly basis — that they needed to change up the order of their shows to help success.

This is a pretty good lineup, but unfortunately for one of our darlings — Community — it may not be the best news. The show still will be competing against the highest rated comedy on television, CBS’ The Big Bang Theory. But, I think this will work well for the rest of the Thursday night. Parks and Recreation lands a successful lead-in show with The Office, and then 30 Rock should draw more audiences with its 10 p.m. slot.

Right now, that’s a solid few hours of comedy — well, except for Outsourced — but outside of our other staple shows, we’re not quite sure what to expect from Perfect Couples. There’s not really much known other than the cast — which features Olivia Munn — and NBC’s website says it “depicts the misadventures of three engaging couples as they struggle to find what makes the ideal relationship.” Honestly, it sounds pretty run-of-the-mill for sitcoms, but I actually do have confidence in NBC when it comes to the comedy realm.
