‘Beetlejuice’ Broadway: The Musical to See This Halloween Season

The right time to see a Broadway show is always, but what’s the perfect choice for spooky season? All you gotta do is say his name three times, three times in a row it must be spoken unbroken! Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice! The musical, which debuted on Broadway in 2019, might sound familiar to you because it’s based on the 1988 cult classic of the same name. I’ve listened to the musical beginning to end and have it on my list of must sees, so I can give you a quick run-through on why Beetlejuice Broadway should be on your list as well.

What is the story of Beetlejuice?

The musical is slightly different from the movie. Beetlejuice, the character, is a millenia-old demon and common fourth-wall breaker. He mocks the living, views life as meaningless, and has the goal to have a person say his name three times so he can be visible to all living beings.

Adam and Barbara Maitland are a married couple who want to start a family but aren’t emotionally available enough to. They avoid starting a family, despite claiming they want to, by throwing themselves into their hobbies. They unfortunately pass on before they have the chance to do so. Beetlejuice sees them as an opportunity and introduces himself to them as their guide to the afterlife.

Meanwhile, Lydia Deetz, a teenager who recently lost her mom, is struggling with her place in the world. Being a teenager is hard enough without loss and grief with an addition of her dad not understanding or noticing her in ways that feel meaningful. Then, she moves into a new house, which was previously owned by the Maitlands, with her dad and gets stuck with a life coach, Delia, who also happens to be her father’s secret girlfriend.

The Maitlands, Beetlejuice, and Lydia both want the Deetzes out of the house, so they make a plan to make it happen.

Beetlejuice on Broadway is the perfect halloween treat

The show makes perfect sense for Halloween. Beetlejuice has themes surrounding ghosts, the afterlife, and the dead, which make it a good choice for the season to begin with. It also isn’t as scary so kids could definitely see it. It is recommended for kids that are 10 and older, with kids under four not allowed in the theatre, but use your best judgment for what might be right for your family.

Personally, I think the show is fun, silly, and a little less serious than some of the other shows on Broadway. Alex Brightman’s Beetlejuice performance and voice is iconic. The show is relatable to teenagers with Lydia’s character. The set has won several awards. Plus, it could be a fun Halloween choice to watch the movie and then see the musical.
