While filmmakers are busy buying up comic books left and right for inspiration, television is looking towards the internet. The latest website/blog/twitter feed to get the small screen conversion is the hilarious photo blog Awkward Family Photos.
ABC recently signed a development deal with the creators of the blog, Mike Bender and Doug Chernack. Apparently the show will be more along the lines of the blog-inspired book of the same name, but since the book and blog are almost exactly alike, we’re going to go ahead and say it’s based off the blog. And the blog is about as obvious as the title suggests. It’s a bunch of pictures of family portraits and they’re embarrassingly awkward. Also, it’s hilarious.
My favorite part of THR’s coverage of this project is how the trade tries to shoehorn in a joke from ABC’s flagship comedy Modern Family as if that was the main reason they’re making this show. “Oh, that one joke did really well in that episode! Let’s find a website that that and make it into a show!” The sad thing is, I bet this is actually the conversation CBS had about Shit My Dad Says.
Also of note, the Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony, will direct and executive produce the series. They also work on Community and it is my duty to remind as many people of that show as possible.
