Bill Nye Speaks Out Against Creationism, Firmly Remains ‘the Science Guy’ — VIDEO

ALTThey don’t call him “the Science Guy” for nothin’. (Though, to be fair, he could just as easily go by “the Bow Tie Guy” and “the No, Not the Guy From Love, Actually Guy”).

In a clip that was posted on Thursday by education resource Big Think and has since gone viral (over 1.1 million views and counting), Bill Nye makes an impassioned, thought-provoking plea for parents to teach their children evolution instead of creationism. “Evolution is the fundamental idea in all of life science, in all of biology. It’s like, it’s very much analogous to trying to do geology without believing in tectonic plates. You’re just not going to get the right answer. Your whole world is just going to be a mystery instead of an exciting place,” says the 56-year-old educator/television host.

Nye, who notes that the denial of evolution in the United States is a unique issue for a country that is so technologically advanced, is known for teaching kids on his show, but here he’s shooting straight from the hip with parents. Addressing the “grown ups” Nye says in the video, “If you want to deny evolution and live in your world, in your world that’s completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe, that’s fine, but don’t make your kids do it because we need them. We need scientifically literate voters and taxpayers for the future.  We need people that can — we need engineers that can build stuff, solve problems.”

Watch the full clip below, in which Nye says those who believe in and teach creationism make for “fantastically complicated” and “crazy…untenable…inconsistent” world views. (If you listen closely, you can hear the collective popping of heads over at Fox News). Plus: Carl Sagan name drop! Check it out here:
