Bill Pertwee dead at 86

Veteran British actor Bill Pertwee has died at the age of 86. He passed away on Monday (27May13) at his home in Devon, England surrounded by family, according to his agent Meg Poole, who gave no other details about his death.
Paying tribute to the beloved actor, Poole says, “He was a really, really nice man. Very bright, very intelligent. He came from a big theatrical family, a big show business family, and like all of them it was his life and it was very important to him and he was a hugely professional, very clever man.”
Born in Buckinghamshire, England, Pertwee enjoyed dozens of high-profile U.K. TV roles during his 40-year career but is best known for playing Chief Warden Hodges in the classic wartime sitcom Dad’s Army.
Pertwee appeared in two movies in the bawdy ‘Carry On’ series – 1970’s Carry On Loving and Carry On Girls in 1973 – and also enjoyed roles in films including The Magnificent Seven Deadly Sins.
In 2007, the actor was awarded a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) medal by Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II for his services to charity.
