Minions are masters at U.K. box office

The MINIONS have chased off dinosaurs – the DESPICABLE ME spin-off movie has beaten JURASSIC WORLD to the top spot at the U.K. box office in its opening weekend (26-28Jun15).
The children’s movie, centred around the yellow evil geniuses made popular in the 2010 cartoon, took $18.5 million (£11.6 million), knocking action movie Jurassic World, the latest installment in the dinosaur franchise, to number two, with takings of $9.2 million (£5.8 million).
Melissa McCarthy’s slapstick sleuth spoof Spy landed at number three, with $1 million (£630,000), and Mr. Holmes, the story of fictional detective Sherlock Holmes’ older years, took fourth spot with $640,000 (£400,000).
Meanwhile, Star Wars fans have sent the franchise’s 1980 offering back into the stratosphere – Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back landed on the chart in fifth place with $440,000 (£280,000) as the sci-fi classic is being aired as part of the U.K.’s Secret Cinema interactive event.
