Jude Law among performers at French migrant camp

Actors Jude Law, Toby Jones and singer Tom Odell performed at a refugee camp in Calais, France on Sunday (21Feb16) to campaign against the site’s demolition.
The Layer Cake star took the celebrities along for a special version of the Letters Live event, where actors read letters from famous historical figures. They updated the show by including passages written by migrants living in the camp, also called the “Jungle”.
Playwright Tom Stoppard also attended, and Odell played a set in front of around 200 refugees at the Good Chance theatre, which was created by British volunteers last year (15).
Law first visited earlier this month (Feb16) and the conditions inspired him recruit more than 140 celebrities, including Idris Elba and Benedict Cumberbatch, to sign an open letter. In the note, they urged British Prime Minister David Cameron to take in more at-risk children from the camp.
“These are innocent, vulnerable children caught up in red tape with the frightening prospect of the demolition of the Jungle hanging over them,” Law told the AFP news agency.
“I wanted to see it for myself… You can’t have an opinion on something until you see it; experience it. It seemed to me that the pressing issue was the kids that were unaccompanied and living in awful conditions, and their plight needed to be highlighted.”
The demolition of part of the camp could start on Tuesday (23Feb16).
