Mary Tamm dies aged 62

Tamm, best known for her role in cult sci-fi series Doctor Who in the 1970s, passed away at a hospital in London on Thursday (26Jul12) after an 18-month battle with cancer.

She began her career as a stage actress in Birmingham, England before landing roles in several movies, including The Odessa File and The Likely Lads.

In the late 1970s, Tamm became a household name in the U.K. when she played Doctor Who’s companion Romana in the 16th season of the hit time-traveller show.

After her run in Doctor Who, Tamm became a regular fixture in British TV drama shows and soap operas, and also continued working in theatre productions.

Her agent Barry Langford tells the BBC, “(Tamm had a) zest for life… She was a fantastic actress. She played stage parts of such range, parts that would take your breath away. She could play any role, and do so wonderfully.”
