In 1994 McLachlan was sued by Uwe Vandrei, a self-confessed stalker who alleged that his letters to her had been the basis of the single "Possession." However, Vandrei committed suicide before the trial began.
McLachlan funds an outreach program in Vancouver that provides music education for inner city children and in 2011, she opened the Sarah McLachlan School of Music in Vancouver, a free music school for at-risk youth.
McLachlan was awarded with an honorary degree from Simon Fraser University in 2011, the Kiwanis International World Service Medal in 2013 and Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Alberta also in 2013.
