The Broadcast Film Critics Association, which includes television, radio and online reviewers, announced their film nominations for 2002, with About Schmidt and Adaptation each receiving four nods.
About Schmidt, a quirky slice of Americana, was nominated for best film, with stars Jack Nicholson getting a nod for best actor and Kathy Bates for best supporting actress. Director/co-writer Alexander Payne and his partner Jim Taylor also received a nomination for best screenplay. Schmidt was also chosen by the L.A. Film Critics as best film of the year.
Best film nominee Adaptation, a unique inside look at Hollywood, also received nominations for best supporting actress (Meryl Streep), supporting actor (Chris Cooper) and writer (Charlie Kaufman, who was also nominated for his Confessions of a Dangerous Mind script).
Rounding out the BFCA’s nominations for best film included Catch Me If You Can, Chicago, Far From Heaven, Gangs of New York, The Hours, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, The Pianist and Road to Perdition.
Joining Nicholson on the list was Daniel Day-Lewis for Gangs of New York and Robin Williams for One Hour Photo, while the best actress contenders included Salma Hayek for Frida, Nicole Kidman for The Hours, Diane Lane for Unfaithful,and Julianne Moore for Far From Heaven.
Other supporting nominees included Alfred Molina for Frida, Paul Newman for Road to Perdition and Catherine Zeta-Jones for Chicago.
The directing nods went to Roman Polanski for The Pianist, Martin Scorsese for Gangs of New York and Steven Spielberg for Catch Me If You Can and Minority Report.
The BFCA will hand out their awards Jan. 17.
