Academy bosses clamp down on Oscars campaigns

Executives at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organisation behind Hollywood’s most prestigious prize-giving, have changed the rules to ban drinks parties and receptions held for Academy members in a bid to drum up support for nominated actors and films.

The rule change means members are allowed to attend screenings after the nominees are announced on 24 January (12), but not industry parties or events where the film is not shown.

Academy President Tom Sherak says in a statement, “These campaign regulations play an important role in protecting the integrity of the Academy Awards process and the distinction of the Oscar.”
