Apes continue to rule at the U.S. box office

The Planet Of The Apes remains the top banana at the U.S. box office after picking up $36 million (GBP21.2 million) in its second week on release. The film swung into first place last weekend (13Jul14) and it has managed to stave off a charge from thriller The Purge: Anarchy to stay on top.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has racked up $139 million (GBP81.2 million) at the U.S. box office.
The Purge: Anarchy kicked off the weekend as America’s top film but lost ground to the apes, and had to settle for second place with a $28.4 million (GBP16.7 million) opening weekend take.
Animated comedy Planes: Fire & Rescue debuts at three, while Cameron Diaz’s new film Sex Tape disappoints at four and Transformers: Age of Extinction rounds out the new top five.
