The Exorcist star was just 22 when she fell for the Super Freak hitmaker after spotting his photo in a magazine and the couple enjoyed a two-year friendship, although Blair is coy about how romantic she and James were.
In a new documentary, Rick James: Behind The Music Remastered, she says, “I wouldn’t say that we were as romantic as people probably wished that we were, or thought that we were.”
James wrote his hit Cold Blooded about his relationship with the actress and she was thrilled, but a little confused: “Cold Blooded is, ‘You’re hot!’ Cold Blooded is a compliment. That was pretty nice that he wrote that about me. I don’t see it, but OK.”
The couple drifted apart in 1984 as James’ drug problems started to take control of his life – and Blair decided to move on.
She reflects, “I could not bear to be around that. It wasn’t healthy for me and it wasn’t healthy for him, so I chose after a while to walk away.”
James died in August 2004.
