Blanchett’s theatre going green

The actress, who is the artistic director of the company, has thrown her support behind the Greening the Wharf initiative, which will see 1,900 solar panels installed in The Wharf Theatre at Sydney’s Walsh Bay.

The panels will provide 70 per cent of the theatre’s electricity requirements – and the Elizabeth star wants more companies to follow their example by investing in green energy alternatives.

Speaking at the launch, she told reporters, “Perhaps this whole area stretching from Barangaroo along Hickson Road and all the way to the Opera House (could be done up). We could be well on our way to becoming the first green arts precinct in the world.

“It’s not just the Sydney Theatre Company benefiting from the support of the Department of Climate Change but every single cultural company down here.”

The actress has spent the last three years helping raise funds for the $4.5 million (£3 million) project.
