The retired San Francisco Giants star was indicted in 2007 on a number of charges for allegedly lying to a grand jury during the government’s investigation of drug company BALCO, testifying that he never knowingly took any illegal steroids.
Bonds was convicted of obstruction of justice in April (11) and on Friday (16Dec11) California Judge Susan Illston ordered the sports star to complete 250 hours of community service, pay a $4,000 (GBP2,500) fine, serve two-years of probation and undergo “location monitoring” or home confinement for one month.
The athlete previously faced up to 21 months in prison.
Bonds, the son of baseball player Bobby Bonds, broke numerous records during his stellar sports career, hitting an all-time high of 762 home runs in Major League Baseball. He currently holds the record for the most home runs hit in a season – 73 in 2001.
The sports star plans to appeal his conviction.
