U2 rocker Bono took former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama out to lunch in New York City on Friday (10Mar17).

The singer dined with the political power couple at the Upland restaurant on Park Avenue in the upscale Flatiron neighborhood, and according to People magazine, the trio enjoyed a casual lunch in the eatery’s basement for more privacy.

“The whole restaurant stood up and applauded and cheered for them (as they left),” a source shares, “Barack Obama waved at everyone upon leaving.”

This isn’t the first time Bono has dined with the Obamas – the U2 hitmaker enjoyed a family meal with them in his home country of Ireland in 2013 during the G8 summit, which was held at the Lough Erne Resort in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.

The musician had nothing but praise for the former President and First Lady after the meal, which took place at a local pub in the Irish town of Dalkey, where Bono and his family live.

“There was no political discussion; it was just two families together,” Bono recalled of the lunch, noting he was accompanied by his wife Ali Hewson and their four kids, while the Obamas brought along daughters Malia and Sasha.

“They’re a great family – we’ve met before,” Bono added.

The With Or Without You hitmaker met with another political leader last month (Feb17) at the Munich Security Conference, where the long-time HIV/AIDS activist sat down with current Vice President Mike Pence to discuss the disease, and thank him for his efforts to raise awareness.
