Brazilian director Eduardo Coutinho murdered

Acclaimed film director Eduardo Coutinho has been stabbed to death at his home in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Police believe the 80-year-old Brazilian had clashed with his son, Daniel Coutinho, who suffers from mental health problems. Coutinho’s wife Maria was also injured and is recovering from her wounds.
Daniel Coutinho was under police guard in hospital on Monday (03Feb14) as he was also hurt in the incident on Sunday (02Feb14).
Coutinho was considered one of Brazil’s greatest documentary filmmakers, with a career spanning over four decades and more than 20 films. He had recently been invited into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Among his best known films are Edificio Master, Twenty Years Later, Babilonia 2000 and Playing.
It was thought he was planning to shoot a new documentary on the 2013 protests against corruption and overspending at the soccer World Cup, set to take place this summer (14) in Brazil.
