Celebrities celebrate as Prop 8 is ruled unconstitutional

Gay unions were made legal for the first time in California in 2008 but state legislation outlawed them just six months later. The controversial ruling was reviewed in a federal appeals court and the Proposition 8 bill was overturned in a landmark decision on Tuesday (07Feb12).

The court officials said, “Proposition 8 served no purpose, and had no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California.”

Osbourne was one of the first stars to note the news, taking to her Twitter.com blog to write, “Are my ears hearing this corectly (sic)? If so my eyes are filling with tears of joy! thank you lord #Prop8IsUnconstitutional!”

Lesbian star Wright tweeted, “I am a gay American and it’s my Constitution too”, while Blink-182 rocker Mark Hoppus added, “prop 8 can suck it. I’ll be glad to see it gone for good.”

Actress and activist Farrow, Hairspray star Ricki Lake and gay actors Michael Urie and Jesse Tyler Ferguson also tweeted their joy at the ruling.
