Despicable Me 2 stays on top at the U.S. box office

Pacific Rim’s monsters and robots could not defeat Despicable Me 2’s minions at the U.S. box office over the weekend (12-14Jul13). The animated sequel scored a second week at number one with a $44.8 million (£29.8 million) haul, taking the film’s overall tally to almost $230 million (£153 million) in America alone.
Another sequel, Adam Sandler’s Grown Ups 2, came in second with a healthy $42.5 million (£28.3 million), while Guillermo del Toro’s blockbuster Pacific Rim disappointed in third place with a $38.3 million (£25.5 million) opening weekend take.
Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy’s comedy The Heat and Johnny Depp’s take on The Lone Ranger round out the new top five.
