The animated family film, which also features the voices of Selena Gomez and Kevin James, beat out Bruce Willis’ new action movie Looper, which earned $21.2 million (£13.3 million).
End of Watch featuring Jake Gyllenhaal came in third with $8 million (£5 million), and in fourth and fifth place respectively were Clint Eastwood’s Trouble with the Curve ($7.5 million/£4.7 million) and Jennifer Lawrence’s thriller House at the End of The Street ($7.2 million/£4.5 million).
Meanwhile, Viola Davis’ new drama, Won’t Back Down, failed to break into the top five, premiering at number 10 with $2.7 million (£1.7 million) in ticket sales.
