Lewis Carroll letter up for auction

A letter in which author Lewis Carroll bemoans his fame following the release of his Alice In Wonderland books is to go up for auction. Carroll – real name Charles Lutwidge Dodgson – penned the note in 1891, more than 20 years after the publication of his most celebrated works, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass.
He wrote the letter to his friend Anne Symonds and told her how he loathed the fame the books’ success brought him and wished he had never written them.
Carroll also described his hatred of being recognised by strangers and having people link his real name to the books.
The letter is expected to fetch up to $6,400 (£4,000) when it is auctioned at Bonhams auction house in London next month (Mar14), 116 years after the author’s death in 1898.
