Mariah Carey Didn’t Want to Record First Christmas Album

Mariah Carey was not initially thrilled about recording her classic Christmas album Merry Christmas.

The Hero hitmaker is famous for her love of all things festive, but when she was approached in 1994 to make a holiday record, she was not keen on the idea.

“I felt like it was a little bit too early in my career to be doing a Christmas album,” she told Billboard.

The record went on to sell millions of copies and gains popularity every year. And the album’s lead single, All I Want For Christmas Is You, is a holiday staple.

“The crazy thing about it is, every year it tends to increase in popularity,” she said.

“I’m very thankful that people seem to still have an attachment to it,” she added. “It makes me feel good when people tell me that it’s part of their lives… (I) never (thought it would be so big).

“I feel like this is something small compared to the rest of my catalogue. This song (All I Want For Christmas is You) just continues to surprise me.”

In addition to her Christmas music and concerts, Mariah has also released a line of holiday cookies and desserts.

The singer has also produced and narrated a holiday movie, titled Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You, which was released last month (Nov17).
