Meatballs rain down on North American box office

Animated family film Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 has cleaned up at the top of the North American box office, debuting with $35 million (£23.3 million). The 3D sequel, which was released four years after the original became a surprise hit in 2009, features the voices of Bill Hader and Anna Faris and easily beat Hugh Jackman’s child abduction drama Prisoners, which grossed $11.3 million (£7.53 million) in its second weekend.
Racing drama Rush was at three with $10.3 million (£6.87 million), while romantic comedy Baggage Claim and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s feature film directorial debut Don Jon rounded out the top five in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Meanwhile, comedy Instructions Not Included has become America’s highest-grossing Spanish-language film ever after taking another $3.4 million (£2.27 million), boosting its five-week total to $38.6 million (£24.13 million). The haul surpasses 2006 fantasy horror Pan’s Labyrinth, which previously held the title with a gross of $37.6 million (£23.5 million).
