Nelson Mandela receives apology over electricity bill gaffe

Ailing former South African leader Nelson Mandela has received a formal apology from city officials in Johannesburg after they mistakenly threatened to cut off his home’s electricity supply. The 95-year-old civil rights icon has been in hospital in Pretoria since 8 June (13) battling a recurring lung infection, and his distraught relatives were shocked to receive a notice threatening action over a non-payment.
However, city officials have now admitted the bill was sent to the wrong house and they have issued an apology to Mandela and his family, saying, “The city wants to convey an apology to the Mandela family for any inconvenience caused by this unfortunate incident.”
A spokesman adds, “(The notice) belonged to another customer and property in a neighbouring suburb, not to the Mandela residence.”
