Robert Durst TV movie in development

A TV movie based upon The Jinx subject Robert Durst is currently in development.
Variety reports Lifetime is behind the as yet untitled feature, which will tell the story from the perspective of Robert’s missing wife, Kathie Durst, who many assume was murdered by Robert. Kathie disappeared in 1982 and, while Robert was a suspect after she vanished, he was never charged.
The network has optioned Matt Birkbeck’s book A Deadly Secret: The Bizarre and Chilling Story of Robert Durst, to use as script source material. Emmy-nominated screenwriter Bettina Gilois will pen the movie.
Real estate millionaire Robert, also known as Bobby, is currently serving time behind bars for a weapons charge. He previously also went to jail for bond jumping and evidence tampering, in relation to the murder case of his neighbour Morris Black. Robert was tried for the 2001 killing, but was eventually acquitted due to lack of forensic evidence.
The murder of Black, disappearance of Kathie and the killing of Robert’s close friend Susan Berman were all covered in the hit HBO series The Jinx, which included candid interviews with Robert and people close to all the legal cases.
Made by filmmaker Andrew Jarecki, who also directed Durst-based movie All Good Things starring Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst, The Jinx left fans shocked when Robert unwittingly confessed to killing “them all”. He’d left his microphone on during a bathroom break, and was talking to himself when he made the admission.
“I didn’t think that Bob was innocent, but I didn’t know that he was guilty,” Andrew told Entertainment Weekly after the final episode aired in 2015. “(Once) I knew he was guilty, I had to recognise that this person who, in some ways, was my friend, at some level still is… The big personality shift was suddenly I realised that I was dealing with a murderer.”
Robert is expected back in court this month (Aug16) to be arraigned on murder charges for the killing of Susan.
