Robin Roberts ‘comes out’ as gay

U.S. TV host Robin Roberts has publicly acknowledged her longtime girlfriend in a heartfelt online message thanking her for helping during her health struggles over the past year (13). In 2012, the 51 year old was diagnosed with a rare blood and bone marrow disease, and subsequently underwent a bone marrow transplant before returning to her post at U.S. breakfast show Good Morning America in February (13).
Roberts took to Facebook.com on Sunday (29Dec13) to share her gratitude for her family and friends – including girlfriend Amber Laign – who helped her through a troublesome year.
She wrote, “I am grateful for my entire family, my long time girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together… I am grateful for the many prayers and well wishes for my recovery. I return every one of them to you 100 fold.
“Reading this comforts me and I hope the same for you: ‘If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are at peace, you are living in the present.’ At this moment I am at peace and filled with joy and gratitude.”
An executive from the ABC network, home to Good Morning America, has praised Roberts for her decision to ‘come out’, telling TVGuide.com, “We love Robin and Amber, who we adore and have all known for a long time. We were touched by her Facebook message today and so thankful for the loving support she has in her life.”
Roberts, who also overcame breast cancer in 2007, has been involved with Laign for 10 years after meeting through mutual friends, according to People magazine.
