Sam Mendes is to become a father for the second time.

The Oscar-winning director and wife Alison Balsom, who married in January (17), are expecting their first child together, a spokesperson for the filmmaker confirmed to the Daily Mail’s Sebastian Shakespeare.

Skyfall helmer Sam is already father to 13-year-old son Joe with ex-wife Kate Winslet, while classical musician Alison, 38, shares six-year-old son Charlie with her ex-boyfriend Edward Gardner.

Sam and Alison opted against revealing when their baby is due, but the trumpeter has been forced to pull out of a concert she was scheduled to perform in London this Thursday.

“We are delighted to hear the news that Alison Balsom is pregnant and fully understand that she is unable to proceed with some of her concerts during this time,” a spokesperson for venue Wigmore Hall told the newspaper.

Sam, 51, and Alison married in Oxfordshire in January, with a blessing held at the church of St Michael and All Angels, in the village of Great Tew, following the official part of the nuptials in a registry office.

Speaking during an interview with The Guardian newspaper in 2008, Sam revealed that his priorities had changed dramatically since becoming a father.

“I spent 20 years looking for every available opportunity to work, and now… I don’t,” he told the publication. “Really, spending time with the kids is the defining. You know how it is, I just don’t want to go away.”

However, he did say that it became easier to balance his personal and professional lives when Joe started school.
