George Lucas sold his Lucasfilm company to the media giant last year (12), and producers are currently working on the seventh installment of the sci-fi series, Star Wars: Episode VII, which will be released in 2015.
Disney boss Robert Iger has now announced plans to create character-focused movies as a sideline to the main future releases.
He says, “We are working on a few stand-alone films, derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga.”

J.J. Abrams has been hired to direct the first Disney-produced feature, which will be penned by The Empire Strikes Back writer Lawrence Kasdan.
