The Dark Knight Rises continues box office reign

The Dark Knight Rises continued its U.S. box office reign over the weekend (28-29Jul12) after raking in a whopping $64 million (£40 million).

The new Batman film opened with a staggering $160.9 million (£100.5 million) in ticket sales last week (begs16Jul12), but its success was marred after a gunman opened fire in a crowded midnight showing of the movie in Aurora, Colorado on 20 July (12), leaving 12 people dead and dozens others wounded.

However, despite the tragedy, fans have turned out in droves to the see the last installment of the trilogy, starring Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway, keeping the movie at the number one spot.

Animated family film Ice Age: Continental Drift came in second with earnings of $13.3 million (£8.3 million), while new comedy The Watch entered in third with takings of $13 million (£8 million).

Rounding out the top five were dance movie Step Up: Revolution ($11.8 million/£7.4 million) and Mark Wahlberg’s Ted ($7.8 million/£4.9 million) in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
