Veteran actress Rosemary Murphy dies

Veteran stage and screen star Rosemary Murphy has died aged 89. The Germany-born actress passed away on Saturday (05Jul14) at her home in New York City after a battle with oesophageal cancer, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Murphy made her Broadway debut in 1950 play The Tower Beyond Tragedy, and went on to star in 15 more productions on the Great White Way, and her stage work earned her three Tony Award nominations.
She also had a distinguished film career, with turns in the Oscar-winning film adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird, as well as That Night and Julia, and more recent appearances alongside the late Philip Seymour Hoffman in both Savages and Synecdoche, New York.
Murphy was also a go-to actress for acclaimed director Woody Allen, who gave her parts in September, Don’t Drink The Water and Mighty Aphrodite.
Her TV credits include shows such as Naked City, The Virginian, The Young and The Restless, and she won an Emmy Award in 1976 for playing U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s mother, Sara, in the telefilm Eleanor and Franklin. She was nominated for another Emmy for the sequel the following year (77).
