Wentworth Miller opens up about teen suicide attempt

Actor Wentworth Miller revealed he attempted suicide when he was 15 over his once-closeted sexuality at a human rights gala in Seattle, Washington. The Prison Break star, who is now 41, was a guest speaker at the Human Rights Campaign Dinner on Saturday night (07Sep13), when he made his first public appearance since revealing his sexuality in a letter protesting Russia’s treatment of gay people.
And he shocked the black tie crowd by revealing his efforts to hide his homosexuality as a teen led him to a very dark place.
Miller explained, “The first time I tried to kill myself I was 15. I waited until my family went away for the weekend and I was alone in the house.”
The actor popped a pot of pills and admitted he had no recollection of the next couple of days, adding, “I’m pretty sure, come Monday morning, I was on the bus back to school pretending everything was fine.
“When someone asked me if that was a cry for help, I said no, because I told no one. You only cry for help if you believe there’s help to cry for.”
Miller also opened up about the issues faced as a closeted working actor in Hollywood – on a hit international TV show.
He added, “I gave thousands of interviews. I had multiple opportunities to speak my truth, which is that I was gay, but I chose not to. I chose to lie… I was filled with fear.”
