Sunday: 2008 MTV Movie Awards

Mike Myers: only hosting because his movie, The Love Guru, comes out June 20, but a solid choice for hosting duties nonetheless.

Expect an almost-too-long opening bit with Myers as Guru Pitka and maybe a cameo by costar/MTV idol Justin Timberlake.

Then expect…well, hopefully, the unexpected–as MTV likes to tease.

The network has struggled to get back to its risqué awards shows of yore (i.e. Madonna’s, ahem, sexually suggestive performance of “Like a Virgin” at the inaugural Video Music Awards in 1984) and always likes to tout the fact that the show is live and “anything can happen.” Here’s hoping something does!

Although Michael Cera, whose movies Superbad and Juno are the most nominated, doesn’t seem like the type to create controversy.

Even if there are no punches or insults thrown, MTV knows how to throw a party that brings out the A-listers and keeps ‘em loose.

Aside from the laundry list of notable presenters and Golden Popcorn accepters, Coldplay (whose new album fittingly drops in a couple weeks) and the Pussycat Dolls are slated to perform.
