Rumors have been swirling that everyone’s favorite couple of weirdos, Katy Perry and Russell Brand, were out of wedded bliss and headed for divorce court. First they spent Christmas apart and were spotted without wedding rings, and now TMZ is reporting that Brand has officially filed for divorce, claiming irreconcilable differences.
Brand’s newly released statement says, “Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I’ll always adore her and I know we’ll remain friends.”
It’s so hard to take these kinds of stories this time of year, especially when you think about the fact that the separated pair’s whirlwind romance became official on New Years Eve 2009 when Brand proposed to Perry in India. The couple were married that October and while there was much talk of the little pitter patter of Russell-Katy hybrids running around their lavish digs, they have no children. As TMZ points out, Brand just went on Ellen this month to dispel the rumors, leaving most of us pretty shocked when they turned out to be true. There’s been no word from Perry yet, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for the singer’s statement.
It’s a pretty terrible note to end 2011 on, but at least they’ll both have plenty of fresh New Year’s resolutions come 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 1.
