Maggie Gyllenhaal’s bold new film The Bride! brings a fresh and rebellious perspective to one of horror’s most iconic figures. Released in theaters on March 6, the film blends gothic romance, dark humor, and violent thrills in a visually striking story set in 1930s Chicago. Written and directed by Gyllenhaal, The Bride reimagines the classic Frankenstein mythology with a punk-rock attitude and a modern emotional core.

In The Bride!, actress Jessie Buckley takes on the title role as Ida, a woman who is murdered and resurrected as the companion for Frankenstein’s lonely monster. However, this version of the story quickly veers away from traditional monster tales. Instead of a passive character, the Bride becomes a fierce and unpredictable force, forming a chaotic partnership with the monster as they embark on a violent journey through Chicago while being hunted by law enforcement. The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast. Christian Bale plays Frank, the misunderstood and isolated monster searching for connection. Annette Bening appears as Dr. Euphronious, the brilliant scientist responsible for bringing the Bride to life. Meanwhile, Peter Sarsgaard portrays Detective Jake Wiles, a determined investigator trying to stop the pair’s destructive rampage. Jake Gyllenhaal also joins the cast as Ronnie Reed, a flamboyant Hollywood actor caught up in the story’s strange events.
The idea for The Bride! was inspired by an unexpected source. Maggie Gyllenhaal once spotted a tattoo of the Bride of Frankenstein on someone’s arm, which led her to revisit the 1935 film Bride of Frankenstein. In that movie, the Bride appears only briefly, yet her image became iconic. Gyllenhaal wanted to explore the character’s inner world and give her a voice that earlier stories never fully examined.
Jessie Buckley has described the role as deeply transformative, allowing her to explore darker emotional depths while bringing an untamed energy to the character. The result is a film that mixes horror, romance, and rebellion in unexpected ways.
With its daring tone and star-studded cast, The Bride! offers a radical new take on a classic tale.
