Jimmy Kimmel teared up during his show Jimmy Kimmel Live! as he revealed his newborn son Billy had to have open heart surgery shortly after his birth.

The 49-year-old presenter and wife Molly McNearney welcomed baby William John Kimmel on 21 April (17), and doctors quickly noticed something was wrong with the tot, before discovering he had a heart disease which required him to have an operation on 24 April (17).

Struggling to control his emotions, Jimmy told the audience on during Monday night’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!: “On Monday morning, Dr. Vaughn Starnes opened his chest and fixed one of the two defects in his heart. He went in there with a scalpel and did some kind of magic that I couldn’t even begin to explain. He opened the valve, and the operation was a success. It was the longest three hours of my life.”

And on Sunday (30Apr17), Billy was able to return home.

“He’s doing great. He’s eating. He’s sleeping. He peed on his mother today while she was changing his diaper. He’s doing all the things that he’s supposed to do,” Jimmy joked. “This is the best.”

Jimmy and Molly are also parents to two-year-old daughter Jane, while the chat show host also has two grown-up children from his first marriage.
