How Celebrities Are Celebrating Black History Month

As we continue celebrating Black History Month, let’s take a look at how different celebrities are honoring this important month.

Celebrities celebrating Black History Month: Kerry Washington

Scandal star Kerry Washington is using her Instagram to honor those who’ve made an impact throughout history. The actress is dressing up as various Black women who have made a difference in the entertainment, business, sports, and political world.

Kerry Washington first took on model, actress, singer, advocate, and businesswoman Beverly Johnson. In her post, Kerry talks about Beverly’s accomplishments like being the first Black woman on the cover of Vogue in 1974. “She showed little Black girls, the fashion industry, and the WORLD that Black is beautiful and powerful,” Kerry wrote.

In another post, Kerry dressed as Olympian Wilma Rudolph. The American sprinter won 3 gold medals and held 3 world records at the 1960 Olympics in 1960. “She wasn’t the first Black athlete or the first female athlete to win 3 gold medals, she was the first ATHLETE,” Kerry wrote in the post. “Wilma ran (literally!) so that Black athletes and Olympians could run too. And show the world our magic, our talents, and our determination.”

Celebrities celebrating Black History Month: Nicki Minaj

On February 8th, Nicki Minaj invited TikTok creators and influencers to chat over Zoom for a Black History Month celebration. The TikTokers were able to have a conversation with the rapper and ask her questions.

While Nicki had good intentions for celebration, some creators spoke out about how the Zoom was taken over by non-Black creators. Nicki responded to the backlash in an Instagram Live on February 9th. “I had a really great call, a really great Zoom, with TikTok today. Shoutout to everybody that was on there,” she told fans. “I hear you guys. I heard what y’all were saying and let me see if I can schedule something else for you guys.”
