This box office weekend was an unprecedented one. As a means of honoring the victims of Friday morning’s Aurora, Colo., shooting, which took place during a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises, the film’s studio, Warner Bros., opted not to release its box office numbers through weekend. Also intending to uphold this expression of respect, all of Hollywood’s other major studios chose to hold their numbers until Monday as well.
And now, the studios have released the results of this weekend. Warner Bros. reports that The Dark Knight Rises earned $160,887,295 in its opening weekend — making it the biggest 2D opener in history. The film beat its predecessor The Dark Knight‘s opening weekend intake by over $2 million (TDK grossed $158,411,483).
The Dark Knight Rises‘ opening was the third biggest of all time, finishing behind The Avengers (which grossed $207,438,708 in its opening weekend) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($169,189,427 in its opening weekend).
