As an actor, you don’t necessarily want your work on screen to become a real-life event.
Actor Russell Crowe, 36, who plays a hostage negotiator sent to South America to assist in the release of a kidnapped U.S. engineer in his latest film, “Proof of Life,” has found himself the target of a real-life abduction plot, according to the FBI. Federal agents have begun their investigation and have interviewed Crowe about the situation as part of the probe.
Normally, the FBI declines to discuss the aspects of a case but due to the media reports already surfacing, Bureau spokeswoman Laura Bosley has released the following statement: “In light of the [media reports], we have confirmed that we have an investigation into a plot to kidnap [Crowe].” She went on to say the probe was continuing.
According to the syndicated TV show “Entertainment Tonight,” Crowe was informed of the plot by the FBI prior to the Golden Globes Awards and was flanked by federal agents on Jan. 21 when he attended the ceremony. Crowe‘s publicist, Robin Baum has said that Crowe‘s own security measures have been increased, but it’s unclear whether the FBI will be providing protection as well. And while in London last week for the premiere of “Proof of Life,” Scotland Yard worked closely with the actor for protection.
This might put a damper on Crowe‘s upcoming moment in the sun when he attends the 73rd Annual Academy Awards at the Shrine Auditorium March 25. He is nominated for Best Actor for his powerful performance in “Gladiator.”
