Hip-hop summit convenes

The first-ever hip-hop summit, held in New York, concluded Friday after several new initiatives were created to further the legitimacy, protection and standards of the rap industry. Russell Simmons, founder of Def Jam records, headed the conference, which included such artists as Will Smith, Sean Combs and Queen Latifah, and examined the effects of hip-hop music on society. The three-day summit produced a surprising result: all agreed that music that is deemed offensive should be inaccessible to minors, and that warning labels and posters should be more visible to deter parents from allowing youngsters to purchase graphic material.
