BBC to recreate life in the trenches

The BBC is planning a documentary that will attempt to recreate the atrocities of the World War I trenches, the BBC news reports. The show will follow 25 young men in a trench, where they will be exposed to tear gas, sleep deprivation, rats and maggots for two weeks. The program will work within modern and health and safety guidelines. While veterans’ associations welcome the series, historians warn that it will be hard to reproduce the reality and horror of the trenches, including the perpetual tension and constant fear soldiers felt. Producers are consulting with military experts and veterans before filming is set to begin this year. The Royal British Legion said it hopes the series will have an educational impact on today’s youths.
