It’s a new season for one of the most celebrated dramas on TV. But is The Sopranos holding pace with its previous two seasons? Are the characters staying fresh?
And just how will the show survive without a character named Big Pussy?
Reviewers Liv Maxwell and Jay Beam chime in on the debate.
Hollywood.com: We’re four episodes into the new season. Are these characters still as interesting as before?
Liv Maxwell: Well, the season started off very slow, as if the producers wanted to go against the hype. But it’s been building. And the characters are getting richer by the moment.
Jay Beam: I’d say they’re more interesting. The Soprano kids are eerily unpleasant, Christopher’s a made-man who can’t earn anymore, and Melfi’s just plain nuts.
Hollywood.com: And Tony?
Maxwell: He’s sexier, I think. And more menacing. But still wonderfully flawed. The whole bigot thing — his reaction to Meadow’s African-American boyfriend — is an interesting twist.
Beam: Nah, he’s always been a bigot. Since the show’s premiere. This season, so far, he does seem less likely to cheat on Carmela – though I’m not sure if that’s a good thing.
Hollywood.com: Is the passing of Nancy Marchand good or bad for the show?
Maxwell: Certainly not bad. Frees Tony up a bit more. But Marchand was a true talent and she is missed.
Beam: I agree. But that shoddy footage of her in the second episode was totally uncalled for. A very silly gimmick.
Hollywood.com: The murder of FBI informant Pussy Bompensiero was last season’s big finale. Any predictions yet on this season’s climax?
Maxwell: I really have no idea… that’s the beauty of this show. Maybe Tony goes to jail.
Beam: He very well could, seeing that the FBI wired the house. I do feel, though, that Jackie Aprile Jr. gets whacked. And hopefully Adriana becomes a stripper, which is what Liv really wants to see.
Maxwell: Christopher would never allow that to happen. Sorry, Jay. Maybe she’ll have a few juicy love scenes.
