“Look – up in the sky! It’s a bird – it’s a plane – It’s Superman!”
Actually, when Hollywood.com caught its first in-person glimpse of the strapping young actor Brandon Routh who plays the Man of Steel in this summer’s highly anticipated Superman Returns at the Golden Globes, we didn’t think it was a bird or a plane but there was definitely a moment where we thought it was the late, great Christopher Reeve.
Not only does Routh have more than a passing resemblance to the iconic actor who donned the cape in the ‘70s and ‘80s, we can report that he sounds eerily like Reeve as well, down to the halting cadence. But in our few moments on the red carpet with Routh, we found him really more on par with Clark Kent–humble, unassuming and polite as can be…even with the broad shoulders befitting the world’s greatest superhero.
Hollywood.com: How was the Golden Globes for you? Was this your debut?
Brandon Routh: Yes. It was my first one and I got to be there. It was fabulous.
HW: I would imagine—you got to meet a Lois Lane.
BR: I did. The former Lois Lane.
HW: Aside from your co-star Kate Bosworth, was Teri your first Lois or have you met others?
BR: Yes. She is the first. Noel Neil [who co-starred as Lois Lane opposite George Reeves in the 1950s series The Adventures of Superman], is making an appearance in our film, but I didn’t meet when she was in Australia. I think that I was off somewhere on location when she was there.
HW: Have you met Dean Cain? I saw him here somewhere earlier today.
BR: No. I haven’t. I’ll be looking out for him and we can complete the duo!
HW: Are you excited to be making your big Hollywood debut now, and are people excited to see you, knowing you’re the new Superman?
BR: It seems to be that way. I see a lot of eyes kind of looking, which is what happens at these things, and I still feel a little sheepish about going up and talking to people because I think that most of the people, since I presented [at the Golden Globes], know who I am, but until next year they haven’t seen anything that I’ve been in. So it’s a little bit awkward at this point. But it seems like people are still somewhat interested.
HW: How are you bracing yourself for the worldwide attention that you’re most certainly going to get in just a few months?
BR: I’m soaking up all the free time that I have with my friends and my family, and learning from this whole, crazy process.
HW: What was the most unexpectedly fun part of playing Superman, and the most unexpectedly difficult part?
BR: Unexpectedly? Well, I did enjoy some of the flying scenes more than I thought I would. Actually, I get motion sickness sometimes and so I thought that I might have trouble with that, but I didn’t, thankfully. That all worked out fine and I never got sick, and because of that the flying was really good.
