It’s a girl for Tori Spelling! The new mom talks to Hollywood.com about her upcoming TV show Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood , premiering June 17, handling her toddler (and now new baby)–and the 90210 spinoff.
Hollywood.com: What is the secret to a great relationship?
Tori Spelling: I think just complete open communication Dean and I talk about everything, the bad and good and it’s just keeping those lines of communication open. It’s just so important because otherwise resentment builds up. Otherwise, things get lost in translation, and too much time spreads. It’s just important. Every day we always vow never to go to bed mad. We always talk about stuff, and he’s great he is a good listener. Some guys are not. Women talk too much and men don’t listen sometimes. Dean listens.
HW: What have you learned about motherhood?
TS: I guess I’ve learned how to see life in a different way. Until you do it, you can’t even imagine what it’s like and once I had the baby, I see everything through his eyes. And it’s giving me kind of a new chance to do everything over again, and really appreciate the little things in life.
HW: Any cravings this pregnancy?
TS: Yes, actually pasta and avocados, but not together![PAGEBREAK]
HW: Do you indeed want to have any more children, or is it two and done?
TS: We don’t know, whatever we are blessed to have. And as long as they are healthy, we can keep conceiving. I don’t know. We don’t want an outrageous number. We want a nice solid family. So who knows – we might try again.
HW: Are you excited to be having a little girl?
TS: I am so excited. It doesn’t seem real to me. I honestly thought that because I wanted a little girl so bad, I’d probably have all boys. So I refused to even really, really look at clothing. I would look at a few things or buy a few things, but I can’t believe I’m going to have a little girl.[PAGEBREAK]
HW: What is Liam doing these days that surprises you?
TS: People say, watch your children because they grow up, literally in a day and it’s true. He changes day by day by day. I feel like I’m missing stuff right now because I’m not being there with him!
HW: Is he talking yet?
TS: He is. He mimics anything you say, and then you can’t get him to repeat it. And you’ll be sitting there talking in a conversation and you’ll hear him repeat it in the backseat. It’s really funny. But he says dada and mama and night night and no no no, because he hears that one a lot! [PAGEBREAK]
HW: What are you doing for your skin these days because it looks beautiful?
TS: Thank you. I love products, and I’m always trying new products, but since I’m pregnant, you can’t really use a lot of products. You have to be very careful. But Crème de la Mer – I love their products because you can use it on pregnant skin and it’s all natural.
HW: You recently did the romantic comedy Kiss the Bride. Do you like those kinds of roles?
TS: Every girl likes romance! I used to always want to be in one because I never thought I’d find it in real life. And since finding Dean, I can now do something different. I can now be in a horror film or something. I can have a new dream! But I do like them I like to do anything with comedy.[PAGEBREAK]
HW: What have you learned about relationships overall?
TS: I have learned that you shouldn’t settle, that we all have our soulmate out there and we just have to believe in finding them.
HW: What are your thoughts when you’re watching your show?
TS: It’s hard because we are executive producers, and we see every edited version. We see many passes before it actually goes on air. So, I’ve seen way too much of myself! So I have to look at it with a different eye. It is reality TV so can’t be like, “Oh that angle wasn’t good on me. My hair doesn’t look right.” You just have to throw caution to the wind and say this is reality and that’s what they’re getting and just focus on the story line and say “People can really relate to us. That looks great and I’m glad that’s in there.”[PAGEBREAK]
HW: Is it cathartic?
TS: Yes, I enjoy watching it. I’m pretty good at watching something from a fan’s point of view as a viewer because I watch a lot of TV. I love TV, so I’m able to watch the show and be like “Wow. I like those two. I can relate to them. They could be my neighbors.” I can see it that way, rather than looking at and just staring at myself.
HW: How real is the show? Do you guys discuss what you’re going to do for the day and get arrangements to film in that location, or are you just winging it each day?
TS: We do wing it. As everyone knows, sometimes locations don’t clear you to film. But if we know that we were doing things in advance we do call ahead and say, “Do you mind if we film this?” And if they do mind, we’ll still do our day to day stuff – for instance, we’re looking at preschools this season for Liam and understandably, there were some that didn’t want us to film there. It didn’t mean that we didn’t go on tours of the school. We just left our cameras behind.
HW: Who is your role model? Who would you say is your hero?
TS: It would probably have to be my husband. My husband does it all. He really does. It’s been a hard pregnancy, especially having a one-year-old and working as much as I did. You never know how things are going to turn out and we didn’t realize that my book was going to be released at the same time that we were filming the series at the same time that I was still pregnant and we have a one year old and my movie was going to be released. So it’s been a lot of stuff. And he’s just been amazing. I honestly could not have done it without him. There are some mornings, when we are able to have some down time, he just says to me, “You sleep in,” and he is up with Liam and I can just hear them down there giggling, and it just makes my heart go oh.[PAGEBREAK]
HW: What will you do if Liam or his sister wants to go into show business? Will you encourage it?
TS: I wouldn’t discourage it, but I want to make sure that they made an informed decision before getting into it. I started in show business when I was very young but I feel like my dad tried his best to educate me on it, to take me and show me what it was like. It wasn’t just assumed that “Because I’m producer, my kid is going to act.” He wanted to make sure it was something I was really passionate about and so I would just want to make sure they were passionate about anything they decided to do.
HW: Do you and Dean try not to argue on camera?
TS: No. I mean Dean and I, in all honesty, don’t argue that much. We’ve never had a screaming and yelling fight. Never ever.[PAGEBREAK]
HW: You guys never say, “I’m not talking to you for an hour” or something?
TS: Not really. That’s hard to do because I think when you’re parents you can’t be like, “I’m not talking to you for an hour!’ We have to talk to figure out what we’re doing with the baby, where we’re going and we’re doing a show together. We’re pretty good. We have it worked out pretty well. I think we argue well. We’re very humanized.
HW: What do you think about the 90210 spinoff?
TS: I think it’s a great idea. When I first heard about it, my first reaction was “It’s about time!” Just because I’m always in such close contact with fans every day. They’ve always asked me constantly “When is there going to be a spinoff or a new generation?” and I didn’t know what the answer was. I was like, “I hope it’s soon.”
