Winter Movie Guide 2002: “Catch Me If You Can”

Catch Me If You Can

The Players: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, Jennifer Garner, Christopher Walken; directed by Steven Spielberg.

The Skinny:This film is based on the true story of Frank W. Abagnale Jr., one of the world’s best con artists in the 1960s and was the youngest man to ever make the FBI’s Most Wanted list. Spielberg decided to bring Abagnale’s story to the big screen, with DiCaprio starring as this master of deception who successfully works as a doctor, a lawyer and as a co-pilot for a major airline–all before his 18th birthday. Frank is also a brilliant forger, whose skill at check fraud nets him millions of dollars in stolen funds–much to the chagrin of the authorities. Hanks stars as FBI Agent Carl Hanratty who makes it his prime mission to capture him and bring him to justice, but Frank is always one step ahead.

The Bottom Line: The dynamic duo of Spielberg and Hanks–together again. Although this time, they get to go on a lighthearted romp rather than wallow in the ditches of WWII. Throw in the likable DiCaprio (who is being Oscar touted more for this role than his performance in Gangs of New York) and you have a winning combination.
