The prestigious awards ceremonies of the past week or so have had some influence on Hollywood.com’s search, but there hasn’t been much drastic change in the rankings overall. Still, a few newbies did manage to sneak into the top 25 this week.
Surprise, surprise: The top two remained the same, as Pamela Anderson continued her reign and Jessica Simpson followed comfortably behind. Anderson‘s appearance as a presenter at the Golden Globes was unexpected, but it was a welcome addition to the usual nominees-as-presenters routine. Simpson‘s performance and subsequent disparaging at the hands of George Lopez at last week’s People Choice Awards made for more tabloid fodder, but not any more searches. Similarly, searches for Katie Holmes (No. 3) and Ang Lee‘s Golden Globes winner Brokeback Mountain (No. 4) saw little change. Angelina Jolie and her bun in the oven leapt to No. 5, thanks in no small part to her big announcement.
There were two surprises to round out the top ten last week. First was the plummet of the week, from Steven Spielberg‘s Munich, at No. 8. Perhaps the Globes had some say in this drop, as the film received an un-Spielberg-like two nominations. (Reserve judgment with us until the big Oscar nominations at the end of this month.) The top ten’s other surprise was also its biggest mover–Woody Allen‘s Match Point at No. 10. Clearly, Allen‘s departure from his usual poor-schlub dramedy is working out nicely for him.
The remainder of the top 25 held some minor surprises. Hostel (No. 12) came back down to Earth after its surge to the top 10 last week; however, it was still quite sought-after. At No. 16, Terrence Malick‘s Colin Farrell starrer, The New World, is gaining steam as its release is also slowly expanded. Then there were the aforementioned new entrants into the top 25: the, er, Globes were quite kind to Drew Barrymore (No. 19), as her “outfit” got users scouring in search of her fashion faux pas-t; after last weekend’s revised box-office tallies, No. 21 Glory Road was proclaimed the biggest earner, as evidenced by its new top 25 status here; Johnny Knoxville‘s The Ringer (No. 24) just snuck back into the mix; and, on a somber note, as the whereabouts of actor Joe Pichler (No. 25) become less clear, users looked back at his career, which includes roles in the last two Beethoven films.
