Check Out An Edited Version Of ‘Inside Out’ Without All Of The Inside Emotions

Inside Out, Disney, Pixar, 010416

Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out was easily the best animated film of 2015. We fell in love with 11-year old Riley as she struggled with her move from the Midwest to San Francisco. However, it wasn’t just Riley that captured our hearts in this film. The brilliance of Inside Out was the fact that it showcased Riley’s emotions in a way that has never been done in a film geared towards children before. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust were all pivotal characters in the film, just as they are in our lives. With Amy Poehler voicing Joy, and The Office alum Phyllis Smith voicing Sadness, this amazing film gave us an in-depth look into Riley’s innermost thoughts as she struggled with this life changing event while also being on the cusp of puberty. Not only was it eye-opening for children, Inside Out was a moving experience for adults. Still, we’ve often wondered what the film would look like without the inside look into Riley’s subconscious. Editor Jordan Hanzon cleverly decided to edited out all of the emotion from the movie, leaving behind a 15-minute film that focuses on Riley from just the outside. So, does Hanzon’s “The Outside Edition” of Inside Out hold up?

Without the inside bits of Inside Out, the film feels just as jarring and confusing as adolescence must have looked like during our preteen and teen years. Not only does Riley need Joy and Sadness, the audience needs them as well. Also, any version of Inside Out without Bing Bong, is too devastating to even consider.
