Disney has officially set the release date for Freakier Friday, the highly anticipated sequel to 2003’s Freaky Friday. Fans can mark their calendars for August 8, 2025. On that same day, cinephiles can also look forward to Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest project, The Battle of Baktan Cross. While both films share the release date, their vastly different target audiences mean Anderson’s film is unlikely to shift. Could this be the next Barbenheimer? Only time will tell.
Disney also release a exclusive first look at Freakier Friday, which sees Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan reprising their roles as mother-daughter roles. They announced the news via Instagram today, (on Friday of all days) and fans are freaking out. See what we did there?
Freakier Friday Plot: What We Know So Far
In Freakier Friday, the plot centers on Tess and Anna swapping bodies with two teenage girls, Harper and Lily. Harper is Anna’s daughter, while Lily is the daughter of Anna’s fiancé, Eric Davis, a British restaurateur. The story takes place two decades after the events of the original film.
The sequel, which was first announced last year, began filming in June. Alongside returning cast members like Mark Harmon as Ryan and Chad Michael Murray as Jake, the movie will feature newcomers Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, and Manny Jacinto. Jordan Weiss penned the script, with Nisha Ganatra set to direct.
In an interview with ABC news, Jamie Lee Curtis called the film a “love letter to mommies.”
“It’s a love letter to mommies and daughters and families,” Curtis said. “This is a love letter to them to just being mothers and the beauty of it all.”
Freakier Friday is set to premiere in theaters on August 8, 2025, but keep an eye out for updates and previews leading up to the release.
