A diverse collection of films form the short list for the Best Visual Effects Oscar, which the Academy revealed today:
Captain America: The First Avenger
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2
Hugo
Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Real Steel
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Transformers: Dark of the Moon
The Tree of Life
X-Men: First Class
Members of the Academy’s Visual Effects will vote to whittle the least down to five before the final nominations are announced on January 24, leaving producers barely three weeks to blanket the trades with glossy “for your consideration” ads. We wish them the best of luck. Except for On Stranger Tides. That movie royally sucked.
